Employees demand Google to quit selling technology to the Police Department

A huge chunk of Google Employees exceeding 1500 in number have made a demand asking the tech giant to quit selling its technology to Police Departments. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai was questioned by the employees via a letter. Their concern was Google advertising its ties with the Police Department and not severing the ties with them as millions of people have already stood against them. Furthermore they asked “Why help the institutions responsible for the knee on George Floyd’s neck to be more effective organizationally?” Adding more fuel to the fire the same Clarkstown police force responsible for the death of George Floyd has been advertised by Google as a success story. The police force has already been sued by Black Lives Matter organizers for their illegal surveillance.

Google is still public about use of G suite for sharing information and digital evidence by the surveillance by the guilty accused Clarkstown Police Department. And also Google funds and is a partner of the Seattle police foundation

A spokesperson of Google told TechCrunch that they are committed to create products that could function against the systematic racism and they were the first company to ban facial recognition from commercial availability. And he states that their AI systems strongly prohibit its use or sale for surveillance. He added that they have longstanding terms of use for generally available computing platforms like Gmail, GSuite and Google Cloud Platform and they will remain available for the government offices including the Department of Police.

The letter from employees to the authorities included that Google should speak to their values and as employees they want to feel proud about their company.

The relationship between racism and the police force goes way back to the time when it was emerged to protect the wealth earned from slavery and genocide. This step won’t be enough to combat the racism, but for a start we just can’t profit from racist policing. These statements were made in the letter.

Google employees have a history of persuading the company and pressurize them. When they were against Google for working on Project Maven, Google refrained from renewing their contract with Pentagon for the above project. In 2018, Google quit being in line for JEDI. JEDI is a huge cloud computing contract with the Pentagon. Other than Google, companies like Salesforce are in contract with Customs and Border Protection for a long term.

There are some positive outcomes of this movement against Police Department. IBM announced that they are no longer selling their facial recognition technology.

Microsoft recently announced that without a federal regulation, they won’t sell facial recognition to police. Amazon made their facial recognition technology unavailable for the police forces for one year.

In response to Floyd’s death, Pichai noted in an email to employees that “Our Black community is hurting, and many of us are searching for ways to stand up for what we believe, and reach out to people we love to show solidarity.”

After Floyd’s death Pichai issued an e mail to the employees and it said that the black community is hurting and many of us are searching for ways to stand up for what we believe.

Google has decided to give away 12 million to the racial justice organizations.
