Tech Trends for 2020 by O'Reilly

O’Reilly tech education firm does an annually study to see how students are using their platform. This study uses both usage and search data from O'Reilly's online learning platform in taking the results. So, it gives a clear picture on what has been accepted and what has been rejected in the tech world. Here are 5 such trends announced by O'Reillys taking the results of its 2019 survey into consideration.

1: Python is the most popular programming language

10% of who are registered on O'Reilly's online training platform are interested in Python and it is the most popular programming language over there.

Python is preferred over other languages not because it is perfect, but because of its importance in machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and data analysis.

As long as AI, ML, and analytics keep trending up, the demand for python will continuously grow.

2: Rapid change in Software architecture, infrastructure, and operations.

The report shows that how users are learning about and searching for architecture, infrastructure, and operations content has changed drastically. The factor behind this change is nothing but the “cloud”.

"Cloud native design is a new way of thinking about software and architecture," according to O'Reilly. People are now searching for cloud architecture elements like microservices and containers—Kubernetes in particular saw a huge increase in the past two years.

Microservices and containers are 2 of the cloud architecture elements that people search for these days. A point to be noted is that increase in Kubernetes during the last 2 years.

Probably because of its issues in scaling DevOps is on a downfall spree.

3: Is interest in AI declining?

AI and ML grew at half the rate they did in 2018, which may seem like a loss of interest, but O'Reilly said that's actually not the case at all. There have been drops in fields related to ML and AI in 2019, specifically data management and data engineering, but where are those learners going?

"The strength of ML/AI might be less evident in data-specific topics than in other topic areas, such as programming languages, where growing Python usage is—to a large degree—being driven by that language's usefulness for and applicability to ML."

There was a loss in the interest for ML and AI in 2019. The growth rate is half of what it was in 2018.

4: Importance of clouds.

In 2019, O'Reilly did see changes in the interest in microservices and Kubernetes.

Interest for cloud learning showed a growth but at a slower rate. But the report added "This slowdown suggests that cloud as a category has achieved such a large share that (mathematically) any additional growth must occur at a slower rate," There were changes in the interests for microservices and Kubernetes in 2019.

5: Is security that important?

"If the sustained growth in security usage on O'Reilly is a reliable indicator, it's possible that security may, finally, be getting the attention it deserves in an increasingly digital world," the report says and we quote.

Many people have taken the entry-level Security+ certification test. It shows that the people who could be specialists in various other fields are trying to get the basic knowledge in security.

O'Reilly further said, this could be an indicator of cyclical security spending after a series of large-profile hacks and breaches.
